Matthew Mitchell has been in the news a lot lately, recruiting like crazy and pulling in transfers that will have his program in great shape when play resumes. He was in the news this weekend, however, in a more unfortunate story.
According to a Facebook post by Mitchell’s wife, Jenna Ramsey Mitchell, the UK Hoops coach had to have surgery to remove blood from his brain.
“About 4 months ago he fell and suffered a concussion, was not well for a couple of weeks, then great after that,” she posted. “Then about 2 weeks ago, he went to the hospital with a faint but persistent headache and they discovered he had blood on the brain and he need surgery (subdural hematoma). All went well and he is on the mend!”

Any procedure that has to do with the brain has to be scary. So for Mitchell to come out of the surgery so well and so quickly is certainly encouraging.
It is a bit surprising that this news did not leak out before the procedure, so I guess there is something to be said for discretion here. I am sure the Mitchell family appreciates the privacy, but not nearly as much as they appreciate having the Coach home.
