There has not been a college basketball NCAA Tournament game in over 14 months. We are desperate for high-level college athletics, and we continue to fill the void with debatable conversations. Andy Katz has brought a new category the “best of” conversation, ranking the top 10 defensive college basketball players in the last decade.
Surprisingly, Katz did more than just arranging the last ten defensive players of the year. And fortunately, Big Blue Nation will be very pleased with No. 1 on the list.

Top Lockdown Defenders, per Andy Katz
- Anthony Davis
- Malcolm Brogdon
- Jevon Carter
- De’Andre Hunter
- Aaron Craft
- Russ Smith
- Willie Cauley-Stein
- Udoka Azubuike
- Matisse Thybulle
- Victor Oladipo
Former Kentucky Wildcats Anthony Davis and Willie Cauley-Stein made the cut, with Davis coming as the top defensive player of the last decade. Katz listed Cauley-Stein as No. 7.
These two guys absolutely deserved to make this list. In fact, I think Willie is a bit low at No. 7. The guy could guard all five positions against the top players in the country.
Notable possible additions are Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who was obviously overshadowed by Davis, and Tyler Ulis, who won Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC the year after Cauley-Stein headed to the NBA.
What do you make of these rankings? Anybody on the list that should not have made it? Who was left off that should have been considered?
