Jonathan Kuminga is the consensus No. 1 player in the 2021 basketball class.
Kuminga has been courted by top programs for years already. There have constantly been rumors about Kuminga reclassifying to the 2020 class, and it seems that possibility is just as alive now as it ever was.
“For me, right now, I would say 50/50,” Kuminga told Paul Biancardi on his High School Happenings Podcast. “With everything is going on right now, I don’t want to put myself in the type of situation where I don’t know what I’m doing. So I’ve just got to be patient with it, sit down with my family and plan on everything.”
Back in November, the 6-8 Kuminga announced the final 10 schools he will consider: Kentucky, Duke, Memphis, Georgia, Auburn, Florida State, Maryland, Michigan, Texas Tech, and Washington. That is an interesting list from a kid playing high school basketball in New Jersey who apparently has no desire to stay close to home.
While a smaller list is expected soon, a reclassification changes the landscape completely. Would he look forward to playing alongside studs like BJ Boston and Terrence Clarke, or would he rather go elsewhere and be the man?
To be honest, Kuminga is going to be the man wherever he lands. The only question is about how much he is willing to share the spotlight and the basketball. As he seems to be a huge John Wall fan based on social media, and they apparently had a good time meeting at the Champions Classic last fall, maybe Wall can get on the horn and nudge Kuminga toward Lexington for his lone season of college hoops.
