Kentucky basketball head coach John Calipari appears to be heating up once again. After missing out on Purdue transfer Matt Haarms, a somewhat familiar face is now on Calipari’s radar.
Evansville graduate transfer DeAndre Williams has trimmed his list to four schools, and one program he beat last season is on it: Kentucky.
The Kentucky Wildcats were fresh off a narrow win over Michigan State to start the season as well as a dominant performance over Eastern Kentucky University when overlooked Evansville waltzed into Rupp Arena and historically took down the nation’s top team.
In the game for Evansville was Williams, scoring nine points and grabbing four rebounds. Williams didn’t have a massive night, but did average more than 15 PPG over the course of the season. His 6’9 frame and ability to put up points has to be an attraction for Calipari.
After losing EJ Montgomery, Nate Sestina and Nick Richards this spring, the Wildcats will need a significant reload up front. No one would expect Williams to step in and play leading minutes/produce massively, but the veteran forward would be a valuable asset in the rotation as well as the locker room.
The other three schools on his list Arkansas, Baylor and Memphis. Needless to say, Kentucky should be the front-runner.
