Apologies for the late Quickies but I’ll be completely honest: I thought today was Sunday.
I woke up, started the coffee pot, and sat down to look at the gifts that my twins received for the sixth birthday party yesterday. As I was helping them assemble various things it dawned on me that today was supposed to be the Kentucky Derby. And that meant that today is Saturday. And I’m scheduled to do the Quickies.
That’s one of the effects that the COVID-19 outbreak has had on all of us. Out sense of time passage has been disrupted. It’s difficult to tell what day it is when there is not a work schedule to help balance it out.
As I look out of my window and see the sunshine I think of what could have been today. It surely would have been a record crowd at Churchill Downs with weather like this.
But alas we have to wait for September 5th until we can properly celebrate. The lead up to the Derby won’t be the same with college football breathing down our necks as well. But I welcome it. I welcome any sense of normal right now. I know it’s coming but it still seems so far away.
Tweets of the Day
Happy Derby Day!

It stinks we have beautiful weather for the first time in years and no race.
Always one of my favorite days of the year for the pride it brings for State of Kentucky and our nationwide spotlight.
And Rodman Street is always insanely fun with the best food
The street parties leading up to Churchill are always amazing.

Damn it.
Quickies
Cats land a commitment from a “sleeper” | Cats Pause- Kahlil Saunders doesn’t have any stars by his name but linebackers coach John Sumrall sees some major potential.
Frank Anselem down to final six | Cats Pause- Kentucky is picking up major steam with the four star big man. I would say this wraps up sooner rather than later. Also keep an eye out for Wake Forrest transfer Olivier Sarr.
Winner of the Virtual Derby | WDRB- I’m sure this would come as a surprise to absolutely no one.
The 10 teams that helped themselves the most with the 2020 class | CBS- Even though the Kentucky Wildcats have the number one class and are the only program to have two of the top ten players in said class, they didn’t make the list. But Texas made the list with their one recruit worth a damn.
NFL to release season schedule and include all 17 weeks | ESPN- Like most fall sports, the NFL is planning on a full season’s worth of games.
Looking at the 31 SEC players that declared for the NBA Draft | Saturday’s Down South- EJ Montgomery was the only Cat to be classified as “no-brainer return to school”. But according to EJ’s dad he has all the skills to be a player in the NBA.
Virtual Kentucky Derby odds | Sporting News- I really don’t know if I have it in me to pay attention to this.
Private QB coaches finding work during pandemic | Sports Illustrated- There’s little to no football training going on throughout campuses across the country. So private coaches are in high demand and business is booming.
There’s no Derby today but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy our bourbon. What’s everyone drinking today? I’m going with Blanton’s.
Cheers!
