Matt Haarms, the 7’3” big man who is transferring from Purdue, is expected to announce his decision today on where he will play his final season of college basketball and while it once seemed like Kentucky was going to be the final landing spot, it seems the tides are turning in this recruitment.
As of yesterday afternoon, it seemed like Kentucky had all the momentum, but then rumors began swirling that Haarms may have had a change of heart and the folks around Lexington no longer felt confident that they had their frontcourt piece for next season.
It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Haarms could still end up in Lexington. There could simply be a disconnect or Haarms could switch back before his announcement tomorrow.
If the rumors are true, however, and Haarms ends up at BYU, I’m not totally sure where Kentucky goes for frontcourt help. My guess would be that Kentucky goes to somebody in 2021 and tries to get a commitment and reclassification as the transfer market is shoring up. That said, there aren’t a ton of options there where that seems like a likely option. Hopefully Cal has something up his sleeve.
In the football world, the NFL is having its first (and hopefully last) virtual draft starting tonight with the first round. While none of the Kentucky prospects are expected to be picked in the first round, it is definitely going to be something worth watching if nothing else for the inevitable glitches, tech errors, and general madness.
It seems like the first two picks are going to be set. Joe Burrow, the LSU quarterback, is expected to go first overall to the Cincinnati Bengals and barring a major change, Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young will go second to the Washington Redskins. After that, who knows what will happen.
Lynn Bowden and Logan Stenberg stand a chance of being drafted on Friday in rounds 2-3, and there are several possibilities of teams those two could end up being drafted by.
Let the fun begin!
