It seems that the 2020 Olympics, which are scheduled to be hosted in Tokyo, could be in jeopardy. Much conversation was made on Sunday evening, as Canada announced they would not send athletes to this summer’s Olympic Games due to the threat of the Corona virus. COVID-19 has quickly become a global pandemic and installed serious question of how our society in general plans to move forward in battle with the virus. As far as sports go, the MLB, NBA, NHL and all NCAA sports have been postponed and/or canceled for the year. That trend is now slowly creeping towards the Olympic Games, of which would affect so many countries and athletes who have spent four years training for their events.
Since 1896, though, the Olympics were only canceled due to World War I and World War II. So will we see a full-on cancelation? It’s probably unlikely. However, everyone’s safety is obviously a priority and must be considered at the highest level. We should know much more in the coming months, but Canada’s announcement on Sunday could very well start an international movement that holds athletes back from this year’s Olympic Games.
