The Kentucky Wildcats still have a vacancy left to fill on the football coaching staff, but it won’t be Mike Stoops filling it.

The brother of UK head coach Mark Stoops was rumored to be who would fill the second defensive backs coach spot next to Derrick Ansley, but according to Mark, it won’t happen.

Mike became a big-name assistant when he was the defensive coordinator for brother Bob Stoops with the Oklahoma Sooners from 1999-03. He turned their success into the head coaching job with the Arizona Wildcats, where he went 41-50 from 2004-2011.

After that, Mike returned to Oklahoma as the defensive coordinator from 2012-18, but he was eventually fired spent the 2019 season as an analyst with the Alabama Crimson Tide. It sounds like Mike thinks remaining on staff with Nick Saban is the best way to go for his coaching career, so he won’t be joining his brother in Lexington.
