The NCAA Tournament is canceled, which means the 2019-20 college hoops season has come to a close.
During an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, head coach John Calipari said he expects 4-5 players to put their names in the draft, though it’s untelling how the process will play out with so much uncertainty in all of sports right now.
Calipari also lamented over his team not getting a chance to compete for a national title, something he truly believed these Wildcats could win.
Cal says they'll have 4-5 kids put their name in the draft, but problem now is nobody will have any idea when the draft will be or how anything will work leading up to it. "You may not know where the end of the road is."— Jeff Drummond (@JDrumUK) March 12, 2020
"I'm really gonna miss this team. I think we could have won the national title," UK head coach John Calipari on ESPN. "They deserved to keep playing, but you know what, stuff happens."— Kent Taylor (@KentTaylorWAVE) March 12, 2020
We should expect Tyrese Maxey and Nick Richards to both declare and remain in the draft, while Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley while likely at least test the waters.
As for a potential fifth player, EJ Montgomery probably wants to be in the NBA, but his stock is very low right now. It’s possible Keion Brooks puts his name in just to go through the pre-draft process, but it’s likely he’s back next season.
For now, I would expect Maxey, Richards and Hagans to be in the NBA next season, while Quickley feels like more of a toss-up that could go either way, and Montgomery ends up returning. But that’s a complete guess at this point, and who knows how/if the NCAA Tournament being abruptly canceled will affect the decisions of any of these guys.
This is a gut-wrenching way for their seasons to end, and I’d imagine they want some time off before thinking about what they want to do next season.
Who do you think has played their last game in a UK uniform?
