To end play in the 2018-2019 regular season, the LSU Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats and Tennessee Volunteers sat atop the Southeastern Conference in that order.
This year, the standings currently look nearly the same. LSU has been at the top all year, but after Auburn’s comeback win on Saturday afternoon, the Tigers are now tied with Auburn and Kentucky for first place in the SEC.
All three teams boast a 8-2 record in conference play, with Auburn (21-2) ahead on the year when compared to Kentucky (18-5) and LSU (17-6).
The road to the No. 1 seed for the SEC Tournament looks like it will be a tight race, with several regular season games playing a significant role in deciding the SEC Tournament seeding.
Kentucky will play at LSU on Tuesday, February 18th, before hosting Auburn on Saturday, February 29th. The Wildcats have yet to see LSU this season but did narrowly lose in Auburn last Saturday.
LSU currently appears to be the favorite to win the SEC regular season title, especially since they don’t face any currently-ranked teams for the rest of the season outside of Kentucky. However, we’ve all seen time and time again how Kentucky’s teams drastically improve throughout the month of February, so don’t be surprised if they finish strong and snag the regular-season crown.
The Wildcats have certainly given Big Blue Nation much reason to doubt them running the table to end the regular season, but they also shouldn’t be ruled out. We’ve seen several upsets this year in college basketball, so LSU losing to an opponent not named Kentucky isn’t totally out of the question.
Of course, if Kentucky were to somehow win out, they’d be the SEC champs, as that would include wins over Auburn and LSU to pull ahead of both for the title. Never say never with Coach Cal.
