SEC Basketball Power Rankings for Week 14

The race for the SEC is going to be fun to watch.

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

It was a wild week in the SEC that saw some upsets and some interesting matchups. But LSU continues to pace the field.

#1 LSU Tigers (17-4,8-0)

Last week: #1

Record last week: 2-0

The Tigers are off to an excellent start in SEC play and they handled their business this week against two opponents that they should’ve defeated.

Early in the week, the Tigers rolled to a 90-76 home victory over Alabama. They backed that up with another home victory over Ole Miss, beating the Rebels 73-63.

LSU will have a major road test coming up this week so we will all see just what the Tigers are made of.

This week: @ Vanderbilt, @ Auburn

#2 Auburn Tigers (19-2,6-2)

Last week: #3

Record last week: 2-0

It wasn’t an easy week for the Tigers as they had two close calls this week, but they were able to prevail.

Early in the week, they were on the road to face Ole Miss. This was a very close game, but it was Auburn that came away with the 83-82 win in double OT. They followed that up with a home matchup with Kentucky. This was a grind it out game that the Tigers were able to win by a score of 75-66.

Auburn will be tested in both of their matchups this week so; it will be interesting to see how they fair.

This week: @ Arkansas, vs LSU

#3 Kentucky Wildcats (16-5,6-2)

Last week: #2

Record last week: 1-1

It wasn’t the greatest week for the Wildcats.

On Wednesday, the Cats had a hard time putting a struggling Vanderbilt team away at home. They even trailed late in the 2nd half. However, they were able to get it going and pull away for the 71-62 win.

On Saturday, the Cats had to go on the road to Auburn. The Cats didn’t do a good job on the glass as they were dominated in that area. However, they also had a tough whistle going against them and in the end came up short losing 75-66.

This week: vs Mississippi State, @ Tennessee

#4 Mississippi State Bulldogs (14-7,5-3)

Last week: #8

Record last week: 2-0

The Bulldogs are starting to really cement themselves as one of the better teams in the conference.

Early in the week, they went on the road to face a Florida team that had been finding their groove and beat them 78-71. They backed that up with a dominating win over Tennessee taking down the Vols 86-73.

Mississippi State will have a huge opportunity this week to make a big statement when they make a tough road trip.

This week: @ Kentucky, vs Vanderbilt

#5 Florida Gators (13-8,5-3)

Last week: #4

Record last week: 1-1

Florida has been one of the more disappointing teams this season as they haven’t lived up to all the hype, they received pre-season.

Early in the week, they lost their 3rd game in a row after falling at home 78-71 to Mississippi State. They were able to get back on the winning side of things at Vanderbilt when they got a much needed 61-55 win.

The Gators have two very winnable games coming up this week that can help them get back to their winning ways.

This week: vs Georgia, @ Ole Miss

#6 South Carolina Gamecocks (13-8,5-3)

Last week: #9

Record last week: 2-0

The Gamecocks are actually starting to look like a very good team in the SEC.

On Wednesday, they were able to go into a hostile environment at Arkansas and came away with a big time 79-77 win. They backed that up by dominating a bad Missouri team at home 76-54.

South Carolina is in a very good spot going forward with the schedule that sits in front of them. They have some very winnable games coming up.

This week: @ Ole Miss, vs Texas A&M

#7 Arkansas Razorbacks (16-5,4-4)

Last week: #7

Record last week: 1-1

The Razorbacks have cooled down after their 14-2 start to the season and dropped a big one at home this week.

That home loss came at the hands of South Carolina as they fell 79-77 despite having a shot at the buzzer to get the win. They were able to bounce back and get a big road win over Alabama beating the Tide 82-78.

The Razorbacks have a huge opportunity coming up at home on Tuesday night.

This week: vs Auburn, @ Missouri

#8 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-9,4-4)

Last week: #5

Record last week: 0-2

Alabama was faced with two difficult matchups this week and it showed as they dropped both of them.

They got the week started with a blowout loss to LSU on the road falling 90-76. The returned home with a chance to get a much-needed win, but they fell to Arkansas at home 82-78 to make their tough week even worse.

They do however have two very winnable games this week and they need to find a way to sweep the week.

This week: vs Tennessee, @ Georgia

#9 Texas A&M Aggies (10-10,4-4)

Last week: #10

Record last week: 1-1

The Aggies were predicted to be at the very bottom of the SEC in the preseason, but you have to tip the cap to head coach Buzz Williams for an impressive season.

They started their week with a big win over Tennessee knocking off the Vols 63-58. They didn’t follow that up with a big win on the road at Georgia though as they fell 63-48 in that matchup.

This will be a big week for the Aggies as they continue to prove the preseason prediction wrong.

This week: vs Missouri, @ South Carolina

#10 Tennessee Volunteers (12-9,4-4)

Last week: #6

Record last week: 0-2

I had felt like the Vols were going to fall off sooner rather than later, and we saw that happen this week as they failed to pick up a win.

Their week started with a home loss to Texas A&M, as the Aggies came to town and won it 63-58. They followed that up by getting dominated on the road by Mississippi State as they fell 86-73.

The Vols were hindered by an unfortunate injury that caused them to lose their point guard, Josiah-Jordan James. So, the struggles make sense when you lose a key player like that.

This week: @ Alabama, vs Kentucky

#11 Georgia Bulldogs (12-9,2-6)

Last week: #12

Record last week: 1-1

Georgia continues to be a head scratcher as they are playing much worse than they should be based on their talent level.

They started the week with a tough loss on the road to Missouri as they fell 72-69. They did bounce back however with a big home win over Texas A&M getting the 63-48 win.

Georgia is much more talented than their record shows so it will be interesting to see if they can figure this thing out or if they will remain near the bottom of the SEC.

This week: @ Florida, vs Alabama

#12 Missouri Tigers (10-11,2-6)

Last week: #13

Record last week: 1-1

The Tigers are struggling in the SEC, but they were able to secure their 2nd conference win of the year this week.

They got that win at home over Georgia when they beat the Bulldogs 72-69. They couldn’t back that up with a road win as they were dominated by South Carolina in a 76-54 loss.

This week: @ Texas A&M, vs Arkansas

#13 Ole Miss Rebels (10-11,1-7)

Last week: #11

Record last week: 0-2

The Rebels were close in both of their tough matchups this week, but they were not able to come away with a win in either one.

They started the week with an 83-82 loss in double OT against Auburn. They followed that up by giving LSU a tough fight but in the end lost that one as well 73-63.

Things won’t get any easier for the Rebels this week.

This week: vs South Carolina, vs Florida

#14 Vanderbilt Commodores (8-13,0-8)

Last week: #14

Record last week: 0-2

Another week, two more SEC losses for the Commodore to now be 0-26 in their last 26 SEC regular season games.

They started the week with a 71-62 road loss to Kentucky and followed that up with a 61-55 home loss to Florida.

This week will be just as difficult for Vandy.

This week: vs LSU, @ Mississippi State
