Saturday Quickies: Win the SEC Edition

The Cats have a big opportunity today to add another quality win to their resume and win the SEC regular season title outright.

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at Texas A&M Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

It’s a big day for the Kentucky Wildcats as the #15 Auburn Tigers roll into Rupp Arena at 3:45. The Tigers bested the Wildcats on February first in Auburn, Alabama. Since then, UK has reeled off seven straight wins and lead the SEC by two full games.

If Kentucky wins this afternoon they will be crowned the SEC champs and will solidify themselves (for now) as a legitimate three seed in the NCAA tournament.

This games means a lot to both teams. I’ve already detailed what’s at stake for the Cats. For Auburn, it’s picking up a big time Quad 1 road win and staying alive in the SEC title race. Auburn has not played well in road SEC games losing at Alabama, at Georgia, at Missouri, and at Florida. But those are their only losses of the season. Bruce Pearl has a very, very good team.

It’s a heavyweight SEC fight and if the Cats come out victorious, fans are going to start mentally preparing themselves for a deep March run.

Tweets of the Day

This isn’t sports related nor am I trying to get political but this is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.

While Nick Richards was receiving much of the early love for SEC Player of the Year, Immanuel Quickley has run away with it during February.

Quickies

The Cats can still get a 2 seed | ESPN- If the Cats win out they will be in very good position to get a two seed in the NCAA tournament. I don’t think there is much difference between a two or a three. To me playing close to home is as important.

SEC title not high priority for Cats | Lexington Herald Leader- March is the ultimate goal but I disagree with this sentiment. Winning the SEC conference title is going to help with putting them in position to win in March. It’s a huge game today and they owe Auburn a beating.

“Kentucky has been undervalued all year” | Cats Pause- Bruce Pearl is 100% correct here. While the loss to Evansville was atrocious, no other team has had a loss in November held over their heads by the bracket blogger boys like the Cats.

SEC basketball round table | Saturdays Down South- A good conversation here but someone making the case that Arkansas’ Mason Jones is the SEC POY over Immanuel Quickley is downright laughable.

CBS top 25 picks | CBS- The folks at CBS like the Cats -5.5 but their play in Rupp has been less than stellar. Honestly I’d almost feel better if this game was on the road. But hey, they’ve won every game but one at Rupp so I guess that should make be feel better.

Cats going for their 49th regular season title | WDRB- The environment should be a fantastic one.

UK Softball steamrolls Loyola Chicago | UK Athletics- The 11th ranked Cats won 10-2 and have lived up to the preseason hype thus far.

Tony Romo inks record breaking deal | Sporting News- The former Dallas QB is set to make more on TV than he did playing football. The word on the street was that ESPN was going to get Romo for Monday Night Football. But CBS rolled in with a $17 million a year deal and Romo will stay with his current employer.

Kansas/Kansas State set to meet after nasty brawl | USA Today- Many precautions are being taken as Kansas travels to Kansas State for a rematch. Earlier this season the teams got into a nasty brawl that spilled into the stands. I still think the programs got off light. But hey... Kansas was involved so I should have expected that.

I’ll be on the airwaves today after the UK vs. Auburn game to take your phone calls. I’ll have John Calipari live after the game and player sound. Join me, Jason Ence, and Terry Brown for the KY Farm Bureau UK Postgame Show!
