Thursday Quickies: Extending the Lead in the SEC Edition

With Auburn’s loss, Kentucky now holds a two-game lead

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at Louisiana State Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Kentucky Wildcats find themselves in a good spot heading into the final stretch of the race for the SEC Championship.

On Tuesday night, the Wildcats went toe-to-toe in Baton Rouge with the LSU Tigers and came away with a win, solidifying their place atop the SEC standings. Then last night, the Auburn Tigers, who only trailed Kentucky by 1.5 games in league play, were upset by the Georgia Bulldogs.

Now, Kentucky holds a two-game lead atop the SEC with a manageable slate of games to finish the season. The Cats finish the season with two matchups against Florida (one in Lexington, one in Gainesville), a trip to Texas A&M, a home matchup against Auburn, and a home game against Tennessee.

If Kentucky takes care of business the rest of the way, they’ll be on their way to the first regular season SEC championship at Kentucky since 2016-2017. Not to mention the importance of landing the one seed in the SEC Tournament and a strong finish to the season could place Kentucky as a three seed in the NCAA Tournament with a slight chance at a two seed depending on what happens with some teams ahead of the Cats.

Kentucky sits in a good position but they could quickly lose it if they don’t remain focused heading into this final stretch. It all starts with taking care of business against Florida on Saturday at Rupp Arena, as the Gators sit in a three-way tie for second place with LSU and Auburn.

One game at a time.
