When the Kentucky Wildcats took the floor against Ole Miss, it was expected to be one of the ‘easier’ games left on the schedule.
It was anything but, as the cold-shooting Cats found themselves trailing 27-25 at halftime and were down much of the second half, but they eventually got going and held on for a 67-62 victory, their 20th of the season.
Tyrese Maxey led the way with 17 points, while Nick Richards chipped in 16, including two go-ahead free throws with 1:11 remaining to put the Cats ahead for good in a game that saw the lead chance nine times in the final five minutes.
EJ Montgomery didn’t record a field goal but did grab a game-high eight rebounds, including a season-high tying four offensive boards. Tyrese Maxey added 14, including three field goals in the final six minutes to help the Cats escape with the win.
Perhaps most importantly, Kentucky converted 19/24 free throws for a 79.2% clip, including 12 straight to end the game.
Up next, the Cats head to Baton Rouge for a critical matchup with the LSU Tigers in a game that will go a long way in deciding who wins the regular-season SEC title.
