UPDATE
It’s Detroit Mercy who is dropping out of the event.
What felt inevitable could become a reality as soon as this week.
With COVID-19 sweeping across America and shutting down a host of programs, including Baylor, Florida and Tennessee over the last 24 hours, it was only a matter of when, not if a Kentucky Wildcats basketball game was canceled due to the virus.
Unfortunately, it sounds like it may happen this week, as KSR’s Matt Jones reports a team set to take part in the Bluegrass Showcase is in danger of missing the event due to COVID-19. Jones added
The Wildcats are set to open the 2020-21 season Wednesday vs. Morehead State, then face Detroit Mercy on Friday before wrapping up the event with Richmond on Sunday. All four teams will play each other over a three-day period.
Now, it’s possible Kentucky could find another team to play in the event, but it would be very challenging logistically to make it happen within such a short timeframe.
Above all else, you just hope that whoever has contracted the virus will be fine and recover from the virus that’s claimed far too many lives.
Also, today has been so 2020.
“Us playing non-conference games is going to prevent us from playing conference games,” said a Power Five head coach. “Why can’t we figure this out?” https://t.co/N8ep5rvKSv
