The Kentucky Wildcats begin their season this week, but they’ll do so with their only returning player from last year’s team that scored a point.
On Monday, head coach John Calipari revealed that sophomore forward Keion Brooks Jr. is not expected to play this week.
“Keion I do not believe he will be here the first week,” Calipari said Monday.
Brooks has been nursing a calf injury for several months now. He did take part in Kentucky’s recent Pro Day, so it looked as though he wasn’t in any danger of missing regular-season games.
That means freshman forward Isaiah Jackson will likely be the starting 4 for at least the first handful of games. Fellow freshman forward Lance Ware will also likely get a lot of run at the 4.
Kentucky hosts the Bluegrass Showcase this week that will see them play Morehead State on Wednesday, Detroit Mercy on Friday, and Richmond on Sunday.
Then next Tuesday, the Wildcats face the Kansas Jayhawks in the Champions Classic. That’s going to be major hurdle to get past if Brooks is sidelined.
As they say, next man up.
