Kentucky basketball has eight national titles, over 2,000 wins, and is unarguably one of the greatest programs of all time. The Wildcats have thrived in the John Calipari era and has been deeper in the tournament year-in and year-out than anyone. However, the Kentucky Wildcats have only had one national player of the year in the history of the program: Anthony Davis in 2012.
Davis won every major award, took Kentucky to a national championship, won a gold medal, and is now and NBA champion. Will another player ever reach that level of dominance? That is quite a tall task, but BJ Boston is on the short list of guys that can at least take a crack at reaching Davis’ college success.
According to Andy Katz, BJ Boston is one of the 10 players he believes will have a chance at being named national player of the year at the end of the season.

Boston is joined by Luka Garza of Iowa State, Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois, Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State, Jared Butler at Baylor, Arizona State’s Remy Martin, Marcus Zegarowski from Creighton, Collin Gillespie of Villanova, Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis, and Virginia’s Sam Hauser. Cunningham and Boston are the only freshmen on the list.
Boston is Kentucky’s highest-ranking recruit since 2015, and he is already projected as a top five NBA Draft pick in 2021. Boston is a superstar wing, which has been hard to find at Kentucky in recent years. If Boston even comes close to living up to the hype, the Wildcats are in for a special year.
