The 2019-20 North Carolina Tar Heels are quickly becoming one of the worst teams the historic program has ever seen, and they’re making history in the process.
Coming into Saturday, the Tar Heels had never lost at Chapel Hill to the Clemson Tigers, who were 0-59 all-time in the historic arena.
Make that 1-59, as Clemson used a furious second-half rally to force overtime before coming away with a 79-76 win over the Tar Heels, who are now 8-8 and 1-4 in ACC play.
This, after North Carolina led by 10 with two minutes to play, but the Tigers went on a 12-2 run to force overtime, highlighted by Aamir Simms hitting a triple with three seconds to play to tie the game at 70-all.
In the extra period, Simms hit a layup with 18 seconds left to put the Tigers up three, and the Tar Heels missed two three-pointers and fell at home for the first time ever to Clemson.
Maybe Roy Williams was on to something when he said this was his “least-gifted” Tar Heels team, who KenPom projects to finish 15-16 and 8-12 in ACC play, which actually feels friendly at this point.
You really hate to see it happen.
