UK inches closer toward top 25

The Cats are one win away from making it back in.

We’re now two weeks through the 2019 college football season.

This past week was a lot of Power 5 programs taking on cupcakes and top 25 teams facing unranked opponents, but there still ended up being a lot of movement in the new top 25 polls.

That’s because six top 25 teams went down this week, the most notable being Texas at home to LSU in a shootout between top 10 foes. The other big-time clash was Clemson hosting Texas A&M, but the Tigers rolled to an easy win over a clearly overmatched Aggies squad.

But there was some huge upsets in the Pac-12 this week, where Washington fell at home to Cal, while Stanford got whipped by USC. Nebraska also fell on the road to Colorado.

As for the Kentucky Wildcats, they had a real shot at cracking the new Coaches Top 25 poll after getting the fourth-most votes of non-top 25 teams last week. But while they did pick up a 21-point win over Eastern Michigan, they also lost quarterback Terry Wilson to potentially season-ending knee injury.

That will prevent Kentucky from cracking the top 25 unless they upset a top-10 Florida team this Saturday at Kroger Field.

The new AP Poll has Kentucky receiving two votes, which would put them as the No. 37.
