The Tennessee Volunteers are off to a historically bad start, as they’ve suffered defeat in painful fashion for the second-straight week.
After getting manhandled by Georgia State last week, Tennessee appeared to get things back on track this week with a better showing vs. the BYU Cougars.
The Vols built a 13-3 lead by halftime, but the Cougars battled back in the second half, twice cutting their deficit to three and forced overtime with a game-tying field goal with just 1 second left.
The game-tying kick came after the Cougar miraculously drove down the field. With less than 20 seconds remaining, BYU QB Zach Wilson went deep down the right side on 3rd-and-6 and found Micah Simon with the help of a busted coverage for a 64-yard gain that set up Jake Oldroyd’s game-tying field goal with just 1 second remaining to force overtime.
After both teams traded touchdowns in the first OT period, Tennessee only came away with a field goal to begin the second period, and BYU quickly worked its way into the end zone and came away with a 29-26 win at Neyland Stadium.
The Vols are now 0-2 with an upcoming schedule that includes Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi State over the next five weeks.
Kentucky will get a crack at the Vols on Nov. 9th.
