The Kentucky Wildcats may have just lost a reserve quarterback to injury.
Following a team scrimmage on Saturday, head coach Mark Stoops announced that Nik Scalzo suffered a knee injury. Scalzo is now undergoing tests, so it’s still unclear how severe it could be.
A true freshman out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Florida, Scalzo was a 3-star recruit in the Class of 2019. The 28th-ranked dual-threat quarterback via 247 Sports composite also held offers from Tulane, Illinois, Harvard, Buffalo and Akron among others.
Scalzo tore his ACL in the state playoffs this past season, but he’s made a full recovery and has been a full participant in UK training camp. His latest injury is in the same knee.
It was already highly likely that Scalzo would be redshirting this season as Terry Wilson and Sawyer Smith are taking the top two quarterback spots. That left Scalzo to compete with Amani GIlmore and Walker Wood for the third-string duties.
Scalzo is one of three quarterbacks featured in season three of the Netflix documentary series QB1: Beyond the Lights. The latest season released on Friday. You can go here to start watching the first episode right now.
Hopefully this is nothing major and Scalzo will be back on the field sooner rather than later.
