The 2019-2020 basketball season promises to be an exciting one for Kentucky fans. With three strong returning players and a slew of incoming talent, the Wildcats are sure to put a strong product on the floor once again.
The main attraction for this talented team will likely be Tyrese Maxey. The combo guard began his recruitment as a point guard, but in his last two years of high school showed that he is much more than a floor general. Maxey can score at all three levels and has established himself as an elite shooter. He is also a strong defender who could wreak havoc alongside Ashton Hagans.
Maxey’s potential as a superstar is no secret whatsoever. In addition to being a projected lottery pick, the Texas native continues to draw praise from national media. Andy Katz of NCAA.com recently named his “21 most entertaining college basketball players to look for next season,” and Maxey was a shoe-in to make the cut.
“Maxey has the speed to get quickly down court, can pull up for a 3 or mid-range jumper and finish around the rim,” Katz wrote. “Kentucky rarely lacks the player with entertainment value. Maxey fills the need.”
Maxey is one of three players from the SEC to make the list. The others are Georgia freshman Anthony Edwards and Mississippi State sophomore Reggie Perry. Top ranked freshmen James Wiseman, Cole Anthony, and Isaiah Stewart also made the cut.
Another notable entry is Myles Powell, who led Seton Hall to a win over Kentucky and an NCAA tournament berth last season. After nearly making the jump to the NBA, Powell is back to prove himself and compete for player of the year honors.
I can guarantee that Tyrese Maxey will be one of the most popular players on this year’s Kentucky roster. But will he be good enough to lead them to the Final Four? That remains to be seen.
