On a day Kentucky lost its top remaining big man target for 2019, a potential frontcourt option for 2020 is also off the board, sort of.
2021 recruit Paolo Banchero has been strongly considering a move into the Class of 2020, where he’d easily be Kentucky’s top frontcourt target. However, he told Stock Risers reporter Jake Weingarten that there will be no reclasificacion.
Breaking: After weighing option of reclassifying to 2020, Five-star prospect Paolo Banchero will REMAIN in the 2021 class for good and not reclassify, he told @Stockrisers. He’s also in the process of planning visit dates which include officials to Duke and Kentucky. Story soon.— Jake (@jakeweingarten) August 13, 2019
The 6-9 big man out of Seattle holds offer from the Wildcats, Duke Blue Devils, Kansas Jayhawks and North Carolina Tar Heels among many others. The hometown Washington Huskies have been viewed as the favorite, though there’s a long way to go in his recruitment now that he’s sticking to the 2021 recriot.
Of course, Bancheor can (and probably will) revisit this next summer, the same way RJ Hampton did this summer after announcing he would not reclassify during the fall of 2018.
If Banchero does stay in 2021, then the only 2020 big men with offers from Kentucky are 4-star forward Lance Ware, 4-star center Clifford Omoruyi, 4-star forward Greg Brown, and 5-star forward Isaiah Todd. Both Omoruyi and Todd were reclassification candidates for 2019, but at this stage, it seems like that option is off the table.
I would expect John Calipari to find another 2020 big man to at recruit and possibly offer in the coming months. Some potential candidates are 5-star forward Isaiah Jackson and 4-star center Mady Sissoko (though his injury may complicate things).
