While there’s still a final cut to be made, Team USA is now down to 17 players.
Of those 17, De’Aaron Fox will be the only one representing the University of Kentucky. This was after former teammate Bam Adebayo, who took the invitation to train in Las Vegas, was cut.
The team plans to take 15 players to Australia and then only have a roster of 12 for the tournament. That said, here’s the 17 finalists:
Harrison Barnes, Marvin Bagley III, Jaylen Brown, De’Aaron Fox, Joe Harris, Kyle Kuzma, Brook Lopez, Kyle Lowry, Khris Middleton, Donovan Mitchell, Mason Plumlee, Marcus Smart, Jayson Tatum, P.J. Tucker, Myles Turner, Kemba Walker, and Derrick White.
I’d personally say there’s about 10 locks on this team, including De’Aaron Fox, who has ascended to become of the NBA’s best young point guard. Alongside Fox, Walker, Kuzma, Lowry, Middleton, Mitchell, Tatum, Turner and Walker will all likely make the next cut.
In the Team Blue vs Team White scrimmage, Adebayo, who played just under 11 minutes for Team Blue who won by 19 points, scored just three points and notched just two boards.
The big man will go back to preparing for his next professional season with the Miami Heat. While he may not be playing with Team USA, Bam certainly has a bright future and would be a staple of the Heat’s roster. Adebayo averaged 8.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season.
Fox also participated in the scrimmage, playing just over 15 minutes. He recorded 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. He will hopefully making the cut when it’s again reduced to just 15.
