After a terrific showing at the Peach Jam this past weekend, five-star guard DJ Steward turned some heads in the college basketball world.
That includes gaining the attention of Kentucky head coach John Calipari and Kentucky, who were there checking out the 2020 guard and have been showing interest, according to Jason Jordan.
However, Kentucky did not yet offer a scholarship to Steward, but Duke did. Steward received a personal text from Coach K and was then offered a scholarship soon after. Since then, a flurry of crystal ball picks for the Blue Devils have poured in.
Steward said that both Kentucky and North Carolina started showing stronger interest after this weekend. While he already holds offers from schools like Texas, Notre Dame, Louisville and Indiana, it will be hard to not listen to the blue-bloods.
The 6-3, 165-pound Steward is currently playing point guard. While Kentucky has been looking at other point men in 2020, Steward said he’s open to playing either guard spot in college.
“All of the coaches see me as a combo guard, and that’s how I see myself,” Steward said. “It doesn’t matter to me where I play. It doesn’t matter who is there, I love playing with great players, and if there’s another point guard there I think that can be a good thing.”
Steward said he plans to finish some upcoming tournaments and then start getting more serious with his recruitment. Here are some recent highlights of him in action:
