Basketball recruiting is a very inexact science.
Coaches have certain things they look for; some they like, some they don’t. And whether you buy into recruiting rankings or not, one thing seems pretty obvious: if a player has a unanimous meteoric rise, he is doing something right.
247 Sports updated their rankings for the 2020 class on Wednesday, and there was movement on virtually all of Kentucky’s current targets. The top guys that the Wildcats are chasing continue to be impressive, with Cade Cunningham perhaps making the biggest splash this spring.
“Cunningham’s arguably had the best spring of any player in the country, averaging 25.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists while leading the Texas Titans to the best records in the Nike EYBL,” Evan Daniels wrote about the Texas native. “At 6-foot-6, Cunningham is one of the most versatile players in the class. He’s at best with the ball in his hands, as he’s a gifted facilitator with impressive vision and passing instincts. He’s a good scorer going to the rim, an active rebounder and a multi-positional defender.”
Cunningham rose five spots to No. 3 overall in the class. That is behind only Makur Makur on Kentucky’s list, who moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 in the rankings.
Kentucky’s other top ten recruits include:
4. Jalen Green (dropped two spots from previous rankings)
5. Scottie Barnes
7. Jalen Johnson (dropped three spots from previous rankings)
10. Daishen Nix (rose three spots from previous rankings)
The player with the highest likelihood of reclassifying to 2019 is N’Faly Dante, who rose three spots to No. 13 overall. The biggest jump for any Kentucky target is that of Josh Hall, who rose an amazing 56 places to No. 52. Right behind him are No. 41 Lance Ware and No. 46 Clif Omoruyi, who jumped 31 and 27 spots, respectively.
All in all, Kentucky has 15 targets currently ranked in the top 52 of the updated 247Sports rankings. Eleven of those appear in the top 25. There is a lot of potential for the 2020 class if John Calipari is able to make waves with a few of these young players.
