It continues to be an extremely busy offseason on the basketball recruiting trail.
While most Kentucky Wildcats fans are laser focused on the Kerry Blackshear Jr. situation, the coaching staff is continuing to build for the future by scouting young players.
Chris Fisher of the Cats Pause reported that John Calipari and assistant coach Joel Justus are both in Colorado Springs observing the USA U19 training camp. Saturday began a four-day event in which the 33 players will try out for just 12 spots on the U19 Team.
The finalists will be announced tomorrow, and the final roster will then be selected over the next week before the team travels to Greece for the FIBA U19 World Cup.
Last week, Calipari was in Charlottesville (VA) at the NBPA Top 100 Camp. Between traveling to all of these various events and signing his lifetime contract, Calipari has remained a busy man over the past several weeks.
The Kentucky coaching staff is taking full advantage of the newly introduced recruiting calendar. Being present in Colorado Springs for the USA U19 training camp will allow Coach Cal to get some face time with several different UK targets, including Sharife Cooper, Scottie Barnes, Josh Christopher, Jalen Green and Cade Cunningham. There is still some tremendous firepower available in the class of 2020, and the Cats seem to have a real shot with those aforementioned prospects.
Some members of the Big Blue Nation might be in panic mode considering Kerry Blackshear Jr. is reported to be in Lexington tomorrow. But I am sure that the staff already has things all buttoned up in regards to that and will be back in Lexington ASAP.
With as great as the season outlook is for this coming year, Cal and staff are still focusing preparation on building for the future.
