Sunday Quickies: Derby Controversy Edition

The Kentucky Derby is at the center of the sporting world for all the wrong reasons.

The 145th running of the Kentucky Derby will be one that none of us forget. It’s doubtful that the winner will contend for a Triple Crown. And the winner didn’t dominate the field. Country House was given the garland of roses yet didn’t cross the finish line first. The horse that did that was Maximum Security.

After the race was over, we all thought that Maximum Security had won. He led for the majority of the race and he pulled away at the end. But there was an inquiry into whether or not Maximum Security crossed into another horse’s lane and impeded his progress.

After about 15 minutes of viewing the tape and deliberation, it was ruled that Maximum Security was disqualified from the race and that Country House, the second place horse, was the winner.

I’m not an expert on horse racing. Not even close. Maybe the officials reviewing the tape got it right. They most likely did. But it just doesn’t feel that way.

Tweets of the Day

Lost in all of this is that a major catastrophe was averted. Looks at the legs and the proximity of the horses.

A historical day for all the wrong reasons.

I don’t know Lunetha personally but keeping John Calipari and his schedule on track makes her a saint. Give her a raise, Cal!

I watched the entire second half of this game and I think Steph Currt missed four lay ups. This was the worst one.
