The 145th running of the Kentucky Derby will be one that none of us forget. It’s doubtful that the winner will contend for a Triple Crown. And the winner didn’t dominate the field. Country House was given the garland of roses yet didn’t cross the finish line first. The horse that did that was Maximum Security.
After the race was over, we all thought that Maximum Security had won. He led for the majority of the race and he pulled away at the end. But there was an inquiry into whether or not Maximum Security crossed into another horse’s lane and impeded his progress.
After about 15 minutes of viewing the tape and deliberation, it was ruled that Maximum Security was disqualified from the race and that Country House, the second place horse, was the winner.
I’m not an expert on horse racing. Not even close. Maybe the officials reviewing the tape got it right. They most likely did. But it just doesn’t feel that way.
Tweets of the Day
Let’s be thankful that yesterday’s Kentucky Derby results were the “worst” part of the day. Maximum Security clipped War of Will’s front legs twice during the race. War of Will could have fallen and caused a massive pile up... there would be a MUCH different conversation today. pic.twitter.com/fLVlftCj1A

Lost in all of this is that a major catastrophe was averted. Looks at the legs and the proximity of the horses.
I find it remarkable that no one in the media seems to be objecting to Churchill Downs stewards just reading a statement and refusing to take questions after taking Maximum Security down. Not questioning decision one way or the other but they owed public more than a dry statement

A historical day for all the wrong reasons.
Happy birthday to my longtime assistant Lunetha Moseley. Lunetha has been with me for nearly 20 years now! Don't know what I would do without her. Hope you have a great birthday, Lunetha! pic.twitter.com/AYXofafkXL

I don’t know Lunetha personally but keeping John Calipari and his schedule on track makes her a saint. Give her a raise, Cal!
Kevin Durant went for 46 points, with six assists and was 6-10 from three point land tonight. Steph Curry did this. If there was still a doubt over "whose team" it is in Golden State right now, I think we got our answer tonight pic.twitter.com/Lhk4LUAxI3

I watched the entire second half of this game and I think Steph Currt missed four lay ups. This was the worst one.
