As a surprise to some walk-on and son of head coach John Calipari, Brad Calipari entered his name into the transfer portal Wednesday.
The younger Calipari redshirted last season and graduated from UK to ensure two more years of NCAA eligibility.
Via the Courier-Journal, Brad admitted it’s been something he’s thought about for a while now.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a while,” Brad said. “With where I am in my basketball career and with what I plan to do academically, this just made the most sense. I plan to remain around my brothers and continue to work on my game.”
His father had a sense of humor when talking about his son’s decision saying, “We honestly didn’t think anyone would notice. But at the end of the day, I want my son to be happy.”
Coach Cal added to his comments later in a Twitter post.
“If he decides to leave, I know our fans will continue to root for him. And if he decides to come back, I’ll soak in every moment to coach my son. I love all my players – I just love Brad a little more.”
Brad appeared in 27 games as a Wildcat over the course of two seasons suiting up for the Wildcats. If he does choose to transfer it will likely be to a mid-major program where he could have a chance to get far more playing time than he would with the Cats.
No matter what happens, the Big Blue Nation surely will root for Brad to having nothing but success.
