We’re getting closer and closer to the deadline for college basketball players who entered their name in the draft to officially decide if they’re staying in or going back to school.
May 29th is that date, and it leaves a big question up in the air for EJ Montgomery.
Montgomery decided to declare for the draft just a couple weeks after the season was over. In his announcement, he stated that he was looking for a first-round selection as he went through this process.
Well, with the process nearly over, no mock draft or big board has given him what he was looking for. In fact, he hasn’t shown up in either round in any outlet.
While this is unfortunate for Montgomery, it does not mean that he is a lock to come back to school. We saw a very similar situation happen with Wenyen Gabriel where he chose to enter his name, didn’t show up on any projections, and then decided to stay in the draft despite that.
A key difference should be pointed out, though, as Wenyen was a sophomore, whereas Montgomery is a freshman. With that, a return for Montgomery may be his best option.
Montgomery is a very talented player and a return to Kentucky may give him the exposure he needs to get drafted next season. However, that still doesn’t guarantee a return, as the buzz has been that he’s ready to be a pro now and not wait another year.
What do you think? Will Montgomery stay in the draft, or will he be wearing Kentucky blue during the 2019-2020 season?
