Monday Quickies: Finish Strong Edition

Cats try to get back on track and Austin MacGinnis is back in football.

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at Tennessee Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

Amazingly the final week of the regular season is upon us. The Kentucky Wildcats are coming off of their worst performance in the conference season as they were bludgeoned by the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday.

But they can’t let that loss linger. They have two tough games left on the schedule and a two seed and Regional in Louisville is on the line. The Ole Miss Rebels are tough in their building and the Cats have them on Tuesday night. On Saturday they will face a Florida Gators team that very well could be playing for their tournament lives.

Now is not the time to sulk or let bad mojo into the locker room. It’s imperative that PJ Washington assert his leadership and get his teammates to focus on the task at hand and finish strong.

Tweets of the Day

Lonnie Johnson has been opening eyes at the combine. Literally. The Seattle Seahawks put him in a staring contest with another draftee. You can’t make this up.

I’m not sure what’s going on with Keldon Johnson but he needs to snap out of it. One of the reasons why the Cats were almost upset by Arkansas and were blown out by Tennessee was because Johnson wasn’t putting up his normal numbers on offense.

Quickies

John Calipari berates Tyler Herro | SB Nation- Overall it wasn’t a pretty scene in Knoxville and this interaction garnered quite the attention. Here’s the deal: should coaches yell at players like that? Probably not. But John Calipari loves his players and his players love him back. This was a none issue that was being blown up by Ricky O’Donnell.

Is UK still a one seed? | WDRB- Not after Saturday. They can still get there but they have some work to do. The Cats have the pieces but some of the guys need to get their heads on straight and get back to playing with some heart and pride.

Good news/bad news trends for Kentucky | Cats Pause- This stat really stood out to me:

The Good News: From Dec. 22 to Feb. 5, Hagans had 40 steals over a span of 12 games, including a stretch of seven straight games with three or more.

The Bad News: In the seven games since, Hagans has recorded just five total steals with only one multiple-steal game.

Yikes.

UK Hoops take care of the Dawgs | UK Athletics- The number 11 women’s basketball team closed the regular season out in style as they got a win on the road at Georgia. The Cats won 58-53 behind Tatyana Wyatt’s season high 17 points.

Latest Bracketology has Cats still a one | ESPN- Joe Lunardi still has UK as a one in the Midwest with UNC as the two seed.

Austin MacGinnis makes a splash in his AAF debut | Commercial Appeal- Two weeks ago MacGinnis was a financial advisor and now he’s getting another crack at football. He have the Memphis Express their first win of the season going 4-4 in field goal attempts and he hit the game winner. How in the hell is this dude not in the NFL? I know the Bears could have used him last season.
