After the Kentucky Wildcats took down the Wofford Terriers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Wofford star Fletcher Magee had some very interesting comments.
Magee said that the Cats defense on him wasn’t any different than what he faced in the Southern Conference this season.
“I’ve shot the shots I got tonight against every team in the [Southern Conference], every other team I’ve played. They were no harder,” Magee told reporters after the game. “I just didn’t shoot it well. Some of them felt good and were short, some of them felt good and were long and some of them were just off. It’s just what happens”
Right after reading that, I had to laugh a little. The defense he faced against Kentucky was a lot longer and a lot more athletic than anything he saw in conference play.
11 of Magee's 12 3-point misses were contested.— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) March 23, 2019
In Thursday's win over Seton Hall, Magee made 6-of-11 contested 3-pointers.
Magee went 0/12 against the stout Kentucky defense and those two factors had everything to do with it. Tyler Herro was glued to him the entire game and did a fantastic job defending him.

However, this wasn’t the first time that Magee has struggled with a tougher defense as the stats show he doesn’t have much success against top Kenpom rated defensive teams as he is shooting just 16% against top 50 defensive teams.

Vs Kenpom top 50 Defenses (4 games): 16.00%

vs Non D1 teams (3 games): 58.06%
Sometimes hype is just hype.
I think it is safe to say that Kentucky defended him a lot better than other teams that he faced in conference play. And you better believe they’ll remember Magee’s comments this week as they prepare for whoever their next opponent is. It’s hard to give bulletin-board material to a team when you’re not going to play them again, but these Cats will absolutely use this as motivation this week.
