Selection Sunday is just days away, and with Championship Week in full swing, the tournament field is beginning to take shape and teams are gaining a much clearer idea of where they might be seeded when the bracket is revealed on Sunday.
As it stands, Kentucky is on the border line between a 1 seed and a 2 seed. Sports Illustrated recently released some insight into how each of the eight teams vying for a 1 seed can clinch a spot on the top line of the tournament field.
As for Kentucky, they can pretty much lock up a 1 seed by bringing home a 5th straight SEC Tournament title this weekend. That won’t be an easy task though.
Kentucky will face off against Ole Miss or Alabama on Friday. The Rebels took Kentucky to the wire in Oxford just a week ago and the Tide gave the Wildcats one of their three conference losses back in January.
After that, Kentucky would likely face a rubber match with Tennessee, which dominated Kentucky in Knoxville after the Wildcats easily handled them in Lexington.
Finally, the Cats could face off against LSU, the other team that defeated them in conference play.
Kentucky could land a 1 seed just by making the SEC Tournament championship game on Sunday, but depending on how Duke and North Carolina fare in the ACC Tournament, as well as Michigan State in the Big 10 Tournament, that becomes less of a certainty.
Here is the full SI article that breaks down some of the scenarios
