The Kentucky Wildcats baseball team was on the diamond Tuesday when they hosted Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
For the Cats, it was another successful day at Kentucky Proud Park, as they improved to 9-1 at their new home with a 6-4 win.
The game did not get off to an ideal start for the Wildcats. SIUE plated two runs off of Kentucky starter Mason Hazlewood in the top of the first thanks to RBI singles by both Peyton Smith-Cordova and Raul Elguezabal.
Kentucky cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth after a TJ Collett sacrifice fly, but SIUE would strike back.
In the top of the fifth with reliever Alex Degen on the mound for Kentucky, Elguezabal ripped a two-run double for SIUE to push the Cougars lead to 4-1.
Luckily, the Wildcats would respond quick. In the bottom half of the inning Collett’s RBI single cut the Cougar lead to 4-2.
This would be the score up until the bottom of the 8th when the Cats clawed back.
Elliot Curtis tied the game with a two-run single, and Ryan Shinn gave Kentucky the lead with a two-run single of his own as the Cats struck for four runs in the eighth.
In the ninth, Daniel Harper would lock down the save as Kentucky clinched their fourth straight win.
The Cats (12-4) will be back in action at home tomorrow to take on in-state foe Western Kentucky for the final game of the non-conference slate. On Friday, Kentucky will open up conference play on the road against No. 11 LSU.
