Just like that, the recruitment of Anthony Edwards is set to end.
It wasn’t long ago that Edwards reclassified from the 2020 class into 2019. Now, he’s ready to announce his college decision next Monday, according to Evan Daniels. Edwards also trimmed his list to just three schools, as North Carolina was cut.
Edwards, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 247Sports Top247, will announce his decision at Atlanta (Ga.) Holy Spirit Academy live on CBS Sports HQ at 9:00 AM ET.
The final list of schools for Edwards, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard, are Florida State, Georgia and Kentucky.
”I can’t wait,” Edwards told 247Sports.
Edwards is ranked as the No. 1 player in America in the class of 2019 by 247Sports. He was originally a 2020 recruit, but he reclassified in November and jumped atop the national rankings.
The 6-5, 215-pound prospect had the Kentucky Wildcats, Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles Kansas Jayhawks and North Carolina Tar Heels in his final five schools, but he’s since cut the Jayhawks and Tar Heels from consideration.
Edwards took a visit to Kentucky for the win over Mississippi State, and he later told Daniels that he enjoyed his trip to Lexington.
“It was great,” Edwards said of the visit. “It was a great atmosphere, the game and the fans at the game kept saying ‘we want Ant.’ Coach Cal is a great dude. Kenny Payne is a great dude and I’m really close with Ashton [Hagans] and Tyler Herro.”
Hagans is of course from Georgia, so that’s certainly helped Kentucky’s cause.
Still, it’s really hard to see Kentucky being the pick right now, especially with the Bulldogs getting a lot of the buzz recently, while the Seminoles have long been viewed as the favorite. My guess is it’s one of those two, but I’m not counting out John Calipari and Kentucky just yet.
If Edwards were to pick Kentucky, he would join Tyrese Maxey, Kahlil Whitney and Dontaie Allen in what would be a strong contender for the No. 1 recruiting class in 2019. There’s also a high probability that Kentucky returns at least one of Tyler Herro, Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley. It’s not out of the question that all three return, which would make for a loaded backcourt.
Who do you think gets Edwards?
