Saturday Quickies: Life without Reid Travis Edition

EJ and Nick have their chance, can Cats defend Bryce Brown, UK baseball and softball in action, and more!

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky at Georgia Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning Big Blue Nation. The Auburn Tigers are in town to take on the #4 Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena today at 1:30 PM.

The Cats already defeated the Tigers on their homecourt earlier this season but they had all of their players available. Today is much different as Reid Travis is sidelined with a sprained knee.

The good thing is Auburn isn’t a team that is going to pound you down low with bigs. Their game is played primarily on the perimeter with their guards. Therefore I think it’s a good game to hand off the five duties to either EJ Montgomery and Nick Richards.

For them, this could very much be a confidence building game. A strong performance from one or both of them this afternoon could spark them going forward in the long term of the season.

Maybe getting them more clock at this juncture in the season could turn the Reid Travis injury into a blessing in disguise.

Tweets of the Day

Pretty good after watching those highlights.

Teams have been able to shoot lights out at Rupp Arena at times this season. UK really has to clamp them down to avoid the upset today.

Fingers crossed for another loss!

Quickies

Can Kentucky be Kentucky without one and done? | Lexington Herald Leader- The NBA is going to lower the draft eligible age to 18, it’s inevitable at this point. John Calipari was asked about it yesterday and he’s all for the rule change. And he’s not worried about getting the best players to Kentucky if the change does occur.

Experts like UK to win | CBS- Kentucky’s size should still pose some major issues for Auburn and that’s why picking UK was almost unanimous. And yes, Gary Parrish actually picked Kentucky this week so if the Cats lose it’s his fault.

ESPN experts all like Kentucky today | ESPN- Not that it means all that much since this time last week every one of them picked Tennessee to win.

UK ready for first test without Travis | UK Athletics- Nick Richards and EJ Montgomery are both confident that they can rise to the challenge and produce for the Cats while the veteran sits out the next few games to recover.

Players to watch and keys to victory | Cats Pause- Obviously Bryce Brown is the dude for Auburn. He can drop 30 on a team in any given game. The Cats just have to defend and hope today is not the day it happens.

UK Softball beats Bethune Cookman | UK Athletic- The Cats win 10-2 with a walkoff run rule homer courtesy of Abbey Cheek. Today the ladies are back in action against Cal.

Sixth inning dooms Cats | UK Athletics- UK baseball is in Lubbock, Texas for a series against Texas Tech. The 3-1 Red Raiders nabbed the first win 7-4 as they scored six runs in the sixth inning. They play again today at 3:00 PM.

Latest bracketology is music to my ears | ESPN- I’ll take this all day over a one seed and then twice on Sunday.

Hoosiers lose. Again. | WDRB- The Indiana Hoosiers dropped their eleventh game out of their last twelve at Iowa, 76-70 in overtime. Keion Brooks, come on down!

Patriots owner caught in prostitution sting | CBS- Robert Kraft’s name was all over the news for all of the wrong reasons yesterday as police in Florida served him with two counts of soliciting prostitution. And his name won’t be the last or biggest name revealed according to media sources.

Join me immediately following the action on the ESPN 680 UK Postgame Show. Call in at 502-267-9680 or text me at 502-437-9680. I’ll have coach Cal’s press conference and sound from players. It’s usually a good time and I can be funny when I want to be.
