John Calipari and his staff are working hard to finish off the 2019 recruiting class, but they’re also hard at work finding players for the 2020 team.
One player high on Kentucky’s wish list is five-star guard RJ Hampton from Texas. The consensus top-10 recruit is ranked sixth overall for 2020 by 247 Sports. It would be a critical addition to the class with 2019 guard Tyrese Maxey expected to stay only one season, along with the fact that both Ashton Hagans and Tyler Herro will likely no longer be around by then.
As of now, the junior has cut his list to five schools. The list consists of Duke, Kansas, Memphis, TCU, and Kentucky.
As of now, 247 has the Blue Devils as the favorite, as Jerry Meyer projects Duke to have a 62% chance to land the guard. Kansas checks in second at 25% while Kentucky rounds up the top three at 12%.
However, Dan McDonald from rivals has a different prediction. He is going with the Cats to land the prized guard. McDonald does add that this could be another tough battle with Penny Hardaway, not to mention Duke is a major contender as well.
Here’s what McDaniels had to say:
“Memphis seems to be one of the schools that has done a lot of work with him early on and I think a lot of what Penny Hardaway is selling was validated by landing James Wiseman in the 2019 class. But beating Duke, Kansas and Kentucky is this one will be a tall task because he doesn’t have the same advantage he did with having coached Wiseman. I’ll take a wild guess on this one and roll with John Calipari adding to his collection of really good guards to have played for him.”
While it’s obviously not a sure thing Hampton picks Kentucky, seeing a recruiting analyst feel that Kentucky has a great chance at landing him is good news.
Kentucky hasn’t been able to sway many of the five-star recruits they have battled for in 2019. If they can get the 2020 class started with a bang, that would be a significant momentum shift for Calipari and company.
