It was a battle for the Commonwealth at Rupp Arena Saturday as the No. 19 Kentucky Wildcats played host to the No. 3 Louisville Cardinals.
The two rivals were on two very different paths heading into the matchup, as Louisville entered the day 11-1 and in contention for the No. 1 overall ranking, while Kentucky had lost two straight, dropping them to 8-3 and in need of a win badly over the Cardinals.
It took 65 minutes to decide, but Kentucky eventually came away with a 78-70 win in overtime. After Louisville took a 68-65 lead with 2:30 minutes in the game, Nick Richards scored seven straight points, including two clutch free throws to put Kentucky ahead 72-70, a lead they would not relinquish. He finished with 13 points and 10 boards.
Tyrese Maxey led the way with a career-high 27 points, while Immanuel Quickley chipped in a career-high 18.
Is this the game that turns Kentucky’s season around? Maybe, but if nothing else, this was a very memorable win over Louisville that fans won’t soon forget.
