Despite the terrible weather, Kroger Field was packed with top recruits on Saturday, all who got the chance to see a monster win against the program’s biggest rival.
One of the top available transfer quarterbacks in the country was in attendance to see Kentucky demolish the Cardinals 45-13 in the pouring rain.
Former four-star prospect Joey Gatewood was present at Kroger Field, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports. Gatewood was reported to be accompanied by 2020 offensive lineman commit, John Young, who has been vocal in his recruiting effort. With Young leading the charge, Kentucky has the chance to put together an incredible class for next season, not to mention Mark Stoops chose to redshirt several promising true freshman to help pave the way for sustained success.
In addition, the Florida Gators, who many thought would be the biggest competition for Gatwood (he’s a Florida native), appear to be out of the running, according to Gators reporter Denny Thompson. That makes it seem even likelier that Gatewood is Kentucky’s to lose.
Of all of the top targets at the game on Saturday, Gatewood may have just been the most important one. He also visited for the Tennessee game several weeks ago and has now had the chance to visit Lexington multiple times in a short amount of time.
One look at the guy and it’s obvious that he has the tools to be an impact maker in the SEC. With the unpredictable injury woes that the Cats saw this season at the quarterback position, adding some quality depth can’t hurt. Even with Terry Wilson back healthy next year, having Gatewood on the team would be a tremendous asset. He may have to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules, but they have been granting a lot more waivers for immediate eligibility recently, especially for quarterbacks.
In 2018, Gatewood was ranked as the third-best dual threat QB in America. Adding a potential NFL talent to the roster would be a huge development and add even more fuel to Kentucky’s recruiting efforts.
As is if dominating Louisville wasn’t good enough, this news about Gatewood is icing on the cake.
