After a thrilling start to the season, the Kentucky Wildcats are atop the most recent CBS Sports rankings. With a victory over the Michigan State Spartans under their belt, Kentucky will face a few much less skilled opponents in the coming weeks.
This bodes well for them keeping the claim as America’s best college basketball team, a title that usually doesn’t sit with one team for too long. They were followed by Duke, Michigan State, Louisville and Kansas in the top five.
Tuesday night may not have been the best showing of Wildcats’ basketball, but they secured the victory under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. That said, here’s what CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish said about the Wildcats opener.
“Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points on only 12 field-goal attempts in Tuesday’s win over Michigan State. The Wildcats won despite shooting just 38.0 percent from the field.”
They may have been outshot by the then-No. 1 team, but the Cats were able to get to the line 32 times. Being able to draw contact may be the staple of this team’s offense as they boast several dynamic wings.
The star of the show was, of course, Tyrese Maxey. Up 2, with a minute remaining, Maxey drilled a deep three to put the dagger through the Spartans heart.
The five-star recruit came to Kentucky for these moments, and with the ball in his hands, he didn’t disappoint. Maxey is looking like Coach Calipari’s most explosive guard since John Wall who was actually at MSG to watch Maxey’s dominant performance.
Overall, this team has areas they can improve in, but after one game, they’re giving Big Blue Nation a reason to celebrate.
