UK target AJ Griffin commits to Duke

The top-five recruit is the highest-ranked 2021 prospect to make his college decision.

AJ Griffin is one of the top players in 2021 and someone Kentucky was making a strong push for.

However, Griffin is now off the board, as the five-star wing committed to the Duke Blue Devils on Monday. He is now the highest-ranked 2021 recruit to make his college decision.

The fifth-ranked player by 247 Sports received an offer from Kentucky in October, but Duke was always seen as a significant favorite in this recruitment. He also held offers from Michigan, Villanova and UCLA among others.

At 6-7 and 200 pounds, Griffin is a great slasher with a solid jumper and freakish athleticism in addition to being a great defender. He was a key member of 2019 USA U16 National Team that won a gold medal in Brazil, as he averaged 13.5 points per game while helping the Americans achieve a perfect 6-0 record.

Speaking of, that Team USA pimpleine continues to run strong for Duke and Coach K, even though he’s no longer the head coach of the men’s national team.

Kentucky currently has a pledge from 2021 guard Devin Askew and has offered Jon Kuminga, Paolo Banchero, Jaden Hardy, Moussa Cisse and Patrick Baldwin. The Cats did have a pledge from Terrence Clarke when he was ranked No. 3 overall in 2021, but he has since reclassified into 2020.

In addition to Griffin, Kentucky and Duke have also been battling for Banchero, Baldwin and Kuminga, so this isn’t the last decision we’ll see from a 2021 recruit that likely comes down to the Cats and Blue Devils.
