John Calipari updates status of EJ Montgomery

New, comments

Montgomery is battling an injury that will likely keep him sidelined for another game.

The Kentucky Wildcats host Evansville on Tuesday, but they’ll likely do so without EJ Montgomery.

On Monday, head coach John Calipari met with the media to preview Tuesday’s clash with the Purple Aces, who are led by former Wildcat Walter McCarty.

When asked about Montgomery, Calipari said the sophomore big man is in a walking boot and is “doubtful” to play Tuesday. Montgomery, who is still listed as day-to-day with a right ankle injury, hasn’t even practiced since injuring the ankle last Tuesday vs. Michigan State, and he missed Friday’s win over EKU.

With Montgomery out, that means freshman wing Kahlil Whitney will see extended minutes at the 4 spot to go with Nate Sestina, Nick Richards and Keion Brooks taking up the other minutes. The Cats didn’t miss a step without Montgomery when they faced EKU, and that should be the case Tuesday vs. Evansville.

However, Kentucky needs a healthy Montgomery to reach its full potential, so hopefully, he’s back sooner rather than later.
