The Kentucky Wildcats started off the season second in the nation, but after a strong first week, Big Blue Nation will see their team No. 1 across the boards.
NCAA’s Andy Katz is consistent with the national media in ranking Kentucky as the top overall team.
UK technically played two games in college basketball’s first full week of play. They, as many know, toppled the Spartans. That was the thriller that came on just after Duke defeated Kansas. Duke has moved to second in most updated polls.
But while Duke and Kentucky may’ve both had big nights, it was the Wildcats who were dubbed the “March Madness team of the week” by Katz.
“The Wildcats beat No. 1 Michigan State 69-62 in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday behind 26 points from freshman Tyrese Maxey. Kentucky then ended the week by blistering Eastern Kentucky 91-49. The Wildcats will be the new No. 1 this week.”
He continued talking on Kentucky when briefly going over why they’re his No. 1-ranked team.
“Took down No. 1 Michigan State in the season-opener in the Champions Classic behind 26 points from freshman Tyrese Maxey. Kentucky is our March Madness team of the week.”
The Wildcats don’t have another top-25 matchup until they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in Las Vegas. And, if the Buckeyes look anything like they did in their opener, that should also be a breeze.
Overall, this Kentucky team, lead by Tyrese Maxey’s dynamic scoring ability, might be sitting atop the rankings for quite some time. With Richards playing well down low, it’ll be tough for this team to slip up until truly challenged.
