Mark Stoops updates depth chart and QB situation

Amid a three-game skid, this could be the most important week of UK’s 2019 season.

The Kentucky Wildcats are facing a pivotal matchup this week when the Arkansas Razorbacks invade Kroger Field.

The big question this week is who will start at quarterback. The incumbent Sawyer Smith has been ineffective over the last two games, though a big reason why was he battled wrist and shoulder injuries. That led to him getting last week off while Lynn Bowden and Walker Wood got the majority of snaps at quarterback.

On Monday, UK released an updated depth chart that still had Smith listed as the starter and Wood as the backup.

Later, Stoops met with the media to preview Saturday’s clash with the Hogs. Stoops said that Smith had a good week of recovery and is feeling significantly better.

In addition, Stoops is proceeding with Smith as the top signal-caller and planning for him to start vs. Arkansas. Stoops didn’t say much about Bowden other than receiver Josh Ali and running back Travis Tisdale are options as special teams returners if Bowden does play quarterback.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, and it doesn’t mean we won’t see Bowden at quarterback this week. Stoops wants to keep Arkansas guessing right up until kickoff, so don’t be surprise to see Bowden or Smith getting the nod Saturday night.
