Karl-Anthony Towns was already one of the NBA’s best big men coming into the 2019-20.
Now, the former Wildcat is establishing himself as a superstar and one of the league’s best overall.
That’s not to say Towns wasn’t already a great player before. But now that the Timberwolves are his team and his alone following Jimmy Butler’s departure last year, the fifth-year center is having one of the best starts an NBA player has ever had, as Zach Kram notes:
Stat of the Day #5: KAT for MVP edition!

Karl-Anthony Towns—a 7-foot center—is the first player in NBA history to record 70+ points and 10+ 3-pointers in the first two games of a season.
Through his first two games, Towns is averaging 36.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 3.5 steals and 5.5 assists per game. He’s also shooting 60(!) percent from three-point range after shooting 40+ percent in each of the previous two seasons.
Obviously, it’s hard to see Towns keeping up those numbers for a full 82-game season, but it does bode well for him having a career year and being a dark-horse NBA MVP candidate.
