The 2021 recruiting class is going to be gaining more and more attention in the coming months, and a top recruit is showing interest in Kentucky.
Jabari Smith is the #5 overall player in the 2021 class and the #2 power forward via 247 Sports composite.
Recently, Smith was at the USA Basketball minicamp, and he was impressing a lot of people with what he showed on the court.
Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader asked 247 Sports national analyst Evan Daniels what he thought about Smith’s performance.
“I thought he was tremendous”, Daniels said. “Honestly, it’s as well as I’ve seen him play. He was active. He was aggressive. He was a confident shooter, and he scored it around the goal. He protected the rim. He rebounded. He rim-ran. There wasn’t much he didn’t do.”
On the recruiting side of things for Smith, Kentucky expressed interest over the summer, and assistant coach Joel Justus made the trip to visit Smith this fall.
As for the current favorite, many believe LSU currently holds the lead since that is where Smith’s father played. However, Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Mississippi were all listed by Smith as teams that had been showing a lot of interest.
“You always gotta consider Kentucky — a blue blood,” he told Roberts. “They’ve sent a number of guys to the NBA. They’re up there with the most players in the NBA. They’re known for developing guys, known for making guys better. That’s a good program.”
Roberts added that “Kentucky is expected to ramp up its interest” in Smith, so expect to hear a lot more about the two sides meeting in the coming weeks and months.
Smith is already established as one of the top players in the 2021 class, but he isn’t going to turn 17 until next May, so he still has a lot of growth and potential to reach before he plays college basketball.
