Maxey is also a Preseason All-SEC Second-Team pick.

The preseason honors continue to roll in for the Kentucky Wildcats.

The latest comes for freshman guard Tyrese Maxey, who is among 20 players on the watch list for the 2020 Jerry West Award, which is annually awarded to the nation’s best shooting guard.

Maxey and Georgia’s Anthony Edwards are the only two freshmen on the preseason list, and they both just so happen to play in the SEC.

Regarded as UK’s top incoming player, Maxey was a Naismith High School Boys’ 2019 All-America Second Team selection. As a senior at South Garland High School, he averaged 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

The combo guard was named Texas Mr. Basketball and was the Dallas-Fort Worth Area Player of the Year. He was a two-time All-State selection and was a 2019 McDonald’s All American. He also won a gold medal as a member of the 2018 USA U18 Team.

The award, which is named after Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry West, will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show in April. Malik Monk won the award in 2017, and he is the lone Wildcat to win the award.
