John Calipari isn’t holding back when it comes to recruiting for the 2020 and 2021 classes. He has been a man on a mission, and the Cats are gaining momentum with top recruits.
In his weekly mailbag on 247 Sports, Evan Daniels answers questions about basketball recruiting. One of them was about the No. 1 player in the 2021 class, Jonathan Kuminga.
Daniels’ answer is a positive update if you’re a UK fan, as they’ve made a lot of progress after Duke was viewed as the early heavy favorite.
“I think it’s pretty early to predict where Kuminga ends up. Of those two (Kentucky and Duke), I would definitely say Kentucky has a better chance. They have offered and met with Kuminga to start the open period. I’m not sure where Duke stands with recruiting Kuminga at this point. I know that LSU is involved. So is Nebraska and a host of others. But it’s still early.”
At the Peach Jam over the summer, Kuminga was arguably the best player at the loaded event, as he averaged 27.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in five games.
Afterward, Kuminga spoke with Zagsblog about his interest in UK.
“I love Kentucky because that’s a good school,” Kuminga said. “It might be a good fit for me. That’s a good school, that’s why I love it. The coach is a good coach.”
It will be interesting to watch this recruitment going forward to see if Kentucky continues to gain momentum for the 6-8 SF from Elizabeth (NJ).
For what it’s worth, 247 Sports recruiting analyst Andrew Slater recently logged a prediction in favor of LSU.
