The Reese’s Senior Bowl features the country’s best senior college football players and top NFL Draft prospects. There are two teams, representing the North and South, that are coached by two NFL teams’ coaching staffs.
This year, there are three Kentucky players on the South Team and all three are defensive backs. Those players are Lonnie Johnson, Jr., Darius West, and Mike Edwards. This is a great opportunity for these guys to improve their draft stock prior to April’s NFL Draft.
The playing rules are extremely simple, so teams have to run very basic packages on offense, defense, and special teams. For example, there are no short-yardage or goal-line packages for the offense, no blitzes for the defense, and no fake punts. It’s an all-star game, but it’s best for everyone’s safety that the playbooks stay simple.
Due to the simplicity of the playcalling, the game is generally low scoring. However, there have been some high-scoring battles over the years. It’s definitely fun to watch, especially when you have guys to cheer for.
Senior Bowl alumni have combined for 17 Pro Football Hall of Famers and 15 players with at least one Super Bowl ring. Some of the greatest players in NFL history played in this game, and the list will continue to grow.
Notable former Senior Bowl players in recent years include David Johnson, Dak Prescott, Carson Wentz, Kareem Hunt, Richard Sherman, and Russell Wilson. And that’s just the beginning. As I mentioned above, it’s a great opportunity for these players to build up their draft stock on the national stage. A lot of players get discovered at a game like this one.
