Kentucky Basketball: Slim chance Wildcats miss on big 3 targets in 2019, analyst says

But which of these guys is Kentucky most likely to land?

Calipari Sea of Blue

The 2019 basketball recruiting class contains a shallow pool of top players, which makes it even more important to get commitments from the top guys on the board.

While the Kentucky Wildcats are still interested in players like Cole Anthony and Scottie Lewis, John Calipari’s major focus for 2019 has been on James Wiseman, Vernon Carey, and Matthew Hunt.

Corey Evans of Rivals was recently asked how likely it would be for Kentucky to miss on all three of these top recruits, and his answer should be very encouraging to Big Blue Nation.

“Kentucky is going big-game hunting this fall and the Wildcats have placed a priority on the top two ranked big men, Vernon Carey and James Wiseman, along with top-five forward Matthew Hurt,” Evans wrote. “There’s a 10 percent chance, at most, that UK misses on all three.”

The truth is that Kentucky may not be the current favorite for any of these guys.

Duke has long been the favorite to land Carey, although recent reports indicate that Kentucky has closed the gap and could even be a favorite. Evans points out that Michigan State and Miami are also still threats to land the big man.

Once Penny Hardaway took over at Memphis, many (including myself) have speculated that Wiseman is a hard Memphis lean. And while Wiseman has his list cut to eight schools, most agree that it is already down to Kentucky and Memphis for his services.

North Carolina and Kansas have been expected to lead for Matthew Hurt early, but he is also considering Duke, Minnsota, Indiana, Memphis, and Louisville in addition to Kentucky. He has a lot of options and his recruitment seems the most wide open.

Out of these three, I am going to go out on a limb here and say Vernon Carey is the most likely to choose Kentucky. My gut says that Wiseman to Memphis is likely, and I have not heard a lot of buzz about Hurt coming to Lexington.

Given recent developments and looking at how next year’s returning roster may shape up, Carey rocking Kentucky blue makes a lot of sense.

Which of the three do you think Calipari is most likely to land?
